5 Steps To Set Up For GP

For newly qualified GPs in the UK, these five steps are crucial, providing a standardised pathway to full qualification and registration. This systematic approach ensures adherence to required standards of competence and care, bolstering credibility and confidence. It forms a strong foundation for professional development and superior patient care.

RCGP Certifcate

Once you have an outcome 6, log in to your RCGP e-portfolio and ‘accept’ the ARCP outcome. Then press the button to ‘apply for CCT’. The RCGP then contact the GMC with a ‘recommendation’ and send you a confirmation.

GMC’s GP register

You will get an email from the GMC a few weeks later to apply to be on the GP register. Log in to your GMC portal → my registration → my applications. After paying the required fee, you will receive your certificate.

Performer’s List

All UK GPs must be on this list. Notify Primary Care Support England (PCSE) of your status changes through PCSE online. You can work if PCSE hasn't updated your status after you've informed them.

Medical Indemnity

UK GPs need additional indemnity beyond the Clinical Negligence Scheme because it doesn't cover inquests, regulatory and disciplinary proceedings and private work. This ensures full protection against all professional risks.

Annual Appraisal

Your appraisal is typically scheduled in your birthday month and updated by the revalidation team after your PCSE submission. Post-pandemic, appraisals have been made 'light touch' to lessen the workload and focus on well-being.

Care for Yourself to Care for Others

It's vital for GPs to prioritise their own well-being to effectively care for others. Seeking help early can prevent issues from escalating, and NHS Practitioner Health offers confidential support specifically for healthcare professionals. This service provides a safe space to address personal and professional challenges, ensuring GPs can maintain their health and continue to provide high-quality care..
